SACHIDA Member Druid’s Garden Strengthens African Cannabis Collaboration Through Rwanda Engagement
The South African Cannabis and Hemp Industry Development Alliance (SACHIDA) is proud to highlight the recent international engagement of one of its founding members, Druid’s Garden, whose leadership continues to expand the footprint of South African cannabis expertise across the continent.
Earlier this month, Cian McClelland, Chief Executive Officer of the Druids Holdings Group, travelled to Rwanda to meet with long-standing client V-Lifestyle, a Nigerian-based company preparing to launch one of Rwanda’s first licensed medical cannabis operations.
A Three-and-a-Half-Year Partnership
Druids Garden has worked with Vie Lifestyle for over three and a half years, supporting the company through a complex regulatory journey towards licensing and implementation. The collaboration began when Rwanda legalised medical cannabis approximately four years ago. While this landmark decision positioned the country as a potential leader in African medicinal cannabis, the process of translating policy into practice has proven slow and technically challenging.
Druids Garden’s involvement has focused on four core areas:
- Regulatory navigation – guiding Vie Lifestyle through compliance requirements and stakeholder engagement.
- Facility design – developing a blueprint for an internationally compliant cultivation and processing site.
- Training and implementation – ensuring that local teams are capacitated to operate according to best practice standards.
- Sustainability and value-chain integration – designing a system that links cultivation, processing, and market readiness into a coherent business model.
The Rwanda Mission
During the visit, Mr. McClelland met with several Rwandan government departments responsible for overseeing the medical cannabis sector. Discussions centred on the final steps in Vie Lifestyle’s licensing process and on ensuring that the project aligns with Rwanda’s long-term national objectives for industrial development, investment attraction, and job creation.
Site visits to Vie Lifestyle’s proposed facility underscored both the promise and the challenges of building a new sector from the ground up. Rwanda possesses a supportive policy framework and an eager entrepreneurial community, yet the institutional mechanisms for regulating, monitoring, and promoting the industry are still taking shape.
The Need for Institutional Frameworks
A key observation from these engagements was the need for capacity building within the Rwandan government to establish regulatory structures that balance investor confidence with public health and safety. Rwanda, like many emerging markets in Africa, now faces the task of creating specialised institutions that can issue, monitor, and support licences while ensuring alignment with international standards such as Good Agricultural and Collection Practice (GACP) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).
It was in this context that the potential role of SACHIDA became apparent. As South Africa’s leading national industry alliance, SACHIDA brings together public- and private-sector partners to develop regulatory frameworks, promote intra-African trade, and facilitate equitable industry growth. Through its network of experienced members—many of whom hold research and commercial licenses—SACHIDA has developed significant institutional knowledge on how to establish compliant, inclusive, and economically viable cannabis and hemp sectors.
SACHIDA’s Role in Continental Development
Following the success of Druids Garden’s visit, Rwandan officials expressed interest in SACHIDA assisting with the broader development of Rwanda’s medical cannabis industry. This invitation opens a pathway for SACHIDA to collaborate with regional governments, not only in Rwanda but across the continent, to help structure the policy, compliance, and industry frameworks that enable responsible growth.
This approach mirrors SACHIDA’s own mission in South Africa: to serve as a federation of industry organisations, giving government a single, representative platform for engagement while supporting transformation, rural development, and indigenous knowledge systems (IKS).
By facilitating the formation of sector-specific associations within each country—such as cultivation, processing, wellness, industrial hemp, and research divisions—SACHIDA can help governments to establish efficient communication channels with their domestic industries, streamline licensing procedures, and encourage investor participation.
Building a Continental Cannabis Network
The collaboration between Druid’s Garden and Vie Lifestyle stands as a practical demonstration of African expertise driving African development. Instead of importing foreign consultants or replicating models from North America and Europe, this partnership embodies a South-South knowledge exchange that values local context and long-term sustainability.
Through its continued involvement, Druid’s Garden will assist Vie Lifestyle with finalising facility design, operational training, and phased implementation. Meanwhile, SACHIDA will focus on engaging policy makers to assist in establishing the enabling environment required for full industry rollout.
Looking Ahead
Two pioneering companies—Vie Lifestyle and Druids Garden—are expected to be among the first licensed participants in Rwanda’s emerging medical cannabis sector. Their success will serve as a case study for how African nations can collaborate to unlock the economic, health, and research potential of cannabis and hemp within a well-regulated, ethical framework.
For SACHIDA, this development reinforces its commitment to strengthening African cooperation and showcasing the continent’s capacity to design, regulate, and manage its own high-value industries.
As Mr. McClelland noted during the trip, “Africa holds the keys to its own cannabis future. Our role is to share what we have learnt, to build capacity, and to ensure that the benefits of this new industry flow to local communities and economies first.”
The Rwanda engagement signals not only progress for Druids Garden and its partners, but also the beginning of a new chapter for SACHIDA as it expands its continental support role—bridging governments, investors, and communities to create a truly African cannabis and hemp economy.
